DIY Dry Shampoo

Here is a recipe for DIY dry shampoo. It is super easy to make and it works just as well as store bought dry shampoo. I found this recipe from wellnessmama.com.

Dry Shampoo Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder or organic cornstarch OR 2 tablespoons arrowroot/cornstarch + 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 5 drops of essential oil of choice (optional- I use lavender)
  • An old make-up brush to apply

Dry Shampoo Instructions

  1. Put the drops of essential oil into the arrowroot or cornstarch and mix with a spoon. Store the mix in a small jar or old powder container.
  2. Apply with an old make-up brush to the roots or oily parts of your hair. Applying with the brush is optional, but it removes the need to comb through as much and is better for styled hair. If you don’t use the brush, comb the powder through your hair and style as usual.

Marble Cake

This cake was my first attempt at a marble cake, and it turned out really good! It doesn’t look the prettiest, but it makes up for that in how tasty it is.

I got this recipe from http://www.mycakeschool.com

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup (242 g) milk
  • 2 teaspoons (8g) vanilla extract (If making a coconut cake, add an additional 1 teaspoon coconut extract)
  • 2 Tablespoons (18 g) vegetable oil
  • 2 1/2 cups (285 g) cake flour
  • 1 1/2 cups (300 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (6 g) salt
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons (12 g) baking powder
  • 1 1/2 sticks (12 T) (169 g) unsalted butter, I cut the butter into 1/2 inch slices onto waxed paper for 5 to 6 minutes it will soften only slightly , it should still be quite cold.
  • 3 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder + 2 T very hot water (for marbling)

NSTRUCTIONS

This recipe uses the reverse creaming method of mixing.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, and Grease and Flour two 8 inch pans.

  1. In the bowl of your mixer, whisk the dry ingredients (except for the cocoa) for 30 seconds to combine. With your mixer on low to medium speed, slowly add the pieces of butter, a few pieces at a time. Mix until the dry ingredients are crumbly and look like coarse sand.
  2. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl to make sure there is no dry flour.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla until blended.
  4. Method is important when using this Reverse Creaming method of mixing. With the mixer on LOW speed VERY SLOWLY add approximately 1/2 of the egg mixture to the dry ingredients, increasing the mixer to medium speed for 1 1/2 minutes. The batter will become thick and fluffy. Scrape the bowl and add the remaining egg mixture in 2 pourings, scraping the bowl and beating for 20 seconds after each addition.

MARBLING INSTRUCTIONS..

  1. Mix 3 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder with 2 Tablespoons very hot water. Stir until smooth & set aside.
  2. Put 1 1/2 cups cake batter into a medium sized bowl and stir in the chocolate mixture to create chocolate batter. Now it’s time to marble our batter in two 8 inch pans.
  3. Using a large spoon, place 3 large spoonfuls of yellow cake batter into each pan, then 3 spoonfuls chocolate batter. Repeat adding more yellow cake batter. You will see areas of both yellow and chocolate batter. Using an offset spatula or knife (we prefer something appox. 1/2 inch wide), swirl the two colors together to get a marbled effect. Do not overmix.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 – 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pans 10 minutes then turn out. (Makes 6 1/2 cups batter

Zucchini Brownies

This is a great recipe for when you want to make something delicious out of a vegetable. I know that I am not a fan of zucchini, but I really like these brownies.

I got this recipe from crazyforcrust.com

Ingredients

For brownies:

2 cups of all purpose flour

1/2 cup of cocoa powder

1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda

1 teaspoon of salt

1/2 cup of vegetable oil

1 1/2 cups of sugar

2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

2 cups of shredded zucchini (This would be one large zucchini or two small smaller zucchinis)

3-5 tablespoons of water

1/2 cup of chopped walnuts (optional)

For frosting:

3 tablespoons of cocoa powder

1/4 cup of melted butter

2 cups of powdered sugar

1/4 cup of milk

1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

Direction:

Preheat the oven at 350 degrees F. Spray a 9×13 baking pan and set it aside.

Whisk the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt together in a medium sized bowl and set it aside.

Use an electric mixer with a paddle attachment and mix the oil, sugar, and vanilla together until well combined. Then add the dry ingredients and stir. Fold in the zucchini and let it sit for  a few minutes so the moisture is absorbed by the zucchini. If the mixture is still powdery add up to 5 tablespoons of water, starting with 1. The batter should be thick. Add walnuts and then spread batter into the pan.

Bake for 25-30 minutes.

Make the frosting by whisking the butter, cocoa, salt, and powdered sugar. Whisk in the milk and vanilla. Allow the brownies to cool and then spread the frosting over them.

This is the whole recipe and it is very easy to make, and they are so good!

A Trip to France

I just got home from a week long trip to France, and it was pretty amazing. I have always wanted to travel to France, so getting this opportunity has been so great, and I am so appreciative of everyone who helped make this happen. I left on Saturday the 16th and flew into Paris. In Paris I got to see so many famous monuments. I went to the Eiffel Tower, and was even able to climb to the second platform of the tower.

img_1836.jpg

I also got to go to Notre Dame, which was so beautiful. I’ve seen many pictures of the church, but going inside and seeing it in person was so much better.

IMG_1796

We also went to the Louvre, which was really cool, but a bit to crowded for my taste. I was able to see the Mona Lisa in person, but the crowds around it made it impossible to get to the very front. The museum is so large, so I wasn’t able to see a whole lot of it.

IMG_4525

After Paris we drove to the Loire Valley. First we went to a chapel in Chartres. This chapel was very old and held a lot of history. It was so cool to be able to go inside it and learn about it’s past.

IMG_4543

From there we traveled to Chambord to visit a castle. This was amazing. It was so cool to be inside a place where kings and queens once lived hundreds of years ago.

IMG_4569

The next day we saw two more castles, which were also very interesting to see.

We then traveled to Normandy and saw Omaha beach, one of the D-Day beaches. We also went to the American Cemetery in Normandy. It was very sad to see where so many people fought and died, but I think that it was good that I went to these places and learned about their history. We also went to a museum about D-Day, and I was able to learn even more about the history of Normandy. We then traveled to Saint Malo, a beautiful town on the shore of the English Channel. The beaches here were so cool because one hour we were walking along the shore, and the next the water was all the way up to the city wall.

IMG_4662

From there we went to Mont Saint Michel, which is an old monk church.

img_4673.jpg

The next day we traveled back towards Paris, but stopped in Versailles. We visited the Palace of Versailles. It was very pretty, but like the Louvre it was also very crowded. We got to see the Hall of Mirrors, which was pretty cool since I have learned about the room in school before and have looked at pictures, and now I can say that I have been inside of it.

The gardens were beautiful as well, but they were so big that we were barely able to see any of them. Our final day was spent back in Paris, where we got to go to the Arc de Triomphe and shop on the Champs Elysees.

img_4813.jpg

On the 25th I flew back home. This trip was so amazing and like I said, I am so grateful that I was able to go, and I am so excited for the next time I get to travel and see more of the world.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Today I found a great recipe to make chocolate chip cookies using coconut oil as a substitute for butter. They taste great and don’t take long to make.

I found this recipe at Alida’s Kitchen.

1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon of baking powder

1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

1/4 teaspoon of salt

1/2 cup of coconut oil at room temperature

1/2 cup of dark brown sugar

1/4 cup of granulated sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips

IMG_4335

Directions

To start, preheat the oven at 350 degrees F.

Then, whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a small bowl. Set this aside for now.

Using an electric mixer, combine the coconut oil and sugars so they are fluffy. Then mix the egg and vanilla until they are well combined.

Add the dry ingredients in gradually and stir until it is all fully combined.

IMG_4336

If the dough is too soft, put it into the fridge for about fifteen minutes.

Put the cookie dough onto cookie sheets and bake in the oven for about 7-10 minutes, or until they are lightly brown.

IMG_4337

Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack, then enjoy!

Crayon Art

For my mother’s birthday, I found a fun DIY craft with crayons that is super easy and fun to do. It doesn’t take a lot of time, and you can personalize it however you want.

IMG_4262

Supplies:

Crayons of any colors you want

Hair dryer

Canvas or a wooden board

Hot glue gun

Masking tape (optional)

Paint (optional)

The first thing that you have to do to make this is glue the crayons onto your canvas. I did mine a gradient going from red to purple, but you can put the crayons in whatever order you would like.

If you would like to create a design onto your canvas, you can use masking tape to create the design. Doing this will leave that section blank of any wax and will make it look like the wax went around it.

After the glue is dry, set the canvas up against something and begin blow drying it to melt the crayon wax down. Make sure that the canvas is upright so that all of the wax melts down.

Allow the wax to completely dry, then take off the tape if you chose to make a design. Be careful taking the tape off so that you don’t take off any wax with it.

If you choose, you can paint the design. I painted my heart a solid white, but you can use whatever color you choose to personalize this art.

Once the paint completely dries, you are all done! This art will look great as decoration, and it is fun to make! I really enjoyed doing this project, I think that DIYs are really great when you are bored or want to make a gift for someone. They are thoughtful and more exciting to give to someone.

IMG_4263

I hope that you enjoyed making this craft, because I enjoyed making it a ton.

Coconut Cake

During the spring, a coconut cake is a yummy dessert that is not very hard to make. This is a great treat to make for Easter, or just any spring day.

I think that cakes are one of the most enjoyable desserts to make. I love finding new recipes that create new challenges when baking. I am always learning new things every time I make a new dessert, and this one was no exception. This recipe helped me progress as a baker, but it was still a fun and not to hard recipe to recreate.

IMG_4230

I got this recipe from https://www.shugarysweets.com/

Supplies:

Two 9-inch cake pans

Baking spray

Mixing bowl

Ingredients:

For the cake:

5 egg whites at room temperature

3/4 cups of milk

3/4 cups of softened unsalted butter

1 3/4 cups of granulated sugar

1 tsp of vanilla extract

1/2 tsp of almond extract

2 1/2 cups of cake flour

1 Tbsp of baking powder

1/2 tsp of kosher salt

1 cup shredded and sweetened coconut

For the frosting:

1/2 cup of softened unsalted butter

2 8 ounce packages of softened cream cheese

6 cups of powdered sugar

1/4 cup of heavy cream

2 cups of shredded, sweetened coconut

Directions:

Time to start the cake! The first thing that you will want to do is preheat the oven at 350 degrees. Then whisk all of the egg whites together with 1/4 cup of milk in a small bowl until they are slightly combined and then set them aside.

IMG_4215

Now, in a mixing bowl beat the butter, sugar, vanilla extract, and almond extract at medium speed for two minutes. Add in all of the dry ingredients and mix them until they are combined. Beat the egg white mixture in until everything is blended completely. Add in the rest of the milk and beat it for 3-4 minutes, then fold in the coconut.

IMG_4218

Take out the two 9-inch cake pans and spray them with the baking spray. Pour the batter evenly into the two pans and bake them for 26-28 minutes, or until they are completely cooked through. Then remove them and let them cool on a wire rack.

Now that the cakes are finished, you can start making the frosting! Beat the butter and cream cheese for three minutes using the whisk attachment on an electric mixer. Add the powdered sugar and heavy cream to the mixture. Then beat it together for and extra 4-5 minutes.

It is finally time to assemble your cake. Place one layer of cake onto a cake stand.  Once the cake is completely cooled, spread the frosting onto this layer, and then add the second layer. Then add frosting to the rest of the cake. Add coconut to the top and sides of the cake. Now that the cake is finished, grab a slice and enjoy your delicious coconut cake!

IMG_4219

I hope that you enjoyed creating this very springy cake, and I hope that you found it very delicious.
